When planning a romantic trip for two, specific locations spring to mind including Paris, Florence, New York or (insert Caribbean island here). I wouldn’t expect Egypt to even be in your top 10.

Considering the recent revolution and political conflicts that still take hold of the country, Egypt has seen a drastic decline in tourism which has had a hugely damaging impact on its tourist industry. In March the New York Times ranked it as the last place on the tourism list due to political unrest resulting in street violence and an unstable economy.

I recently spent 10 days in Cairo. Though frustrating at times, my partner and I managed to have an interesting and insightful trip. This article is for the adventurers, the brave at heart and for those of you who might just be a little bit curious about the land of ten thousand minarets…

Look up, you’re in Cairo! This should be the city’s motto. Take a trip to Old Cairo to experience the Islamic heritage of the city. Towering above you in all their splendour, the minarets (mosque towers) pierce the clear blue skies, each one competing with the next. Take a taxi to Al-Azhar Street and make your way through Medieval Islamic Cairo. Start off on Muizz Street which hosts the largest concentration of medieval architecture in the Muslim world. Here also is your chance to break off the main path, get lost walking down the winding cobbled streets and visit the metal beaters and spice markets. One word of advice, do not allow yourself to be followed by locals offering to take you to “the real medieval market stalls”, they’ll walk you around aimlessly, showing you their friend’s stalls which usually sell cheap products made in China. At the end of your tour they’ll expect some money or for you to buy perfume from their shop and if you refuse they can get angry so watch out for these nifty merchants.

Whilst in Islamic Cairo you’ll want to visit mosques. I would suggest those on Muizz Street as well as the great Mosque of Al-Azhar which is on Al-Azhar Street. Ladies should cover up, which means full length trousers/skirt and a top that covers your arms down to the wrists and especially your chest. Carrying a pashmina around with you is also handy as you must cover your hair. I also suggest wearing shoes that you can easily slip off and can carry around in your hands as there are men who sit at the entrance of mosques who will try to charge you to put your shoes away, this isn’t necessary. Be aware of “tour guides”, more often than not they don’t speak a word of English. They’ll walk you around for 5 minutes then take you into a dark hidden room to ask for money and they will insist until you give them lots of money!

If you got through Islamic Cairo and loved it, you’ll also enjoy the Saladin Citadel of Cairo. The citadel is located on a hill that towers over the city, a reminder of the great Salah al-Din who fortified the citadel during the 12^th century in order to protect it from the Crusades. Here you have a panoramic view of the city with the pyramids of Giza in the distance. The Mosque of Mohammed Ali is a work of architectural genius and the good thing is that this appears to be a harassment free zone and one of the only tourist sites where you’ll find tourist police.

Another fantastic and merchant free zone is Coptic Cairo. Ask your driver to drop you off at Mar Girgis metro and bear witness to Cairo’s once thriving Coptic Christian community. The walls of the medieval quarter will shade you from the sun. I suggest paying a visit to the Hanging Church.

Finally you can’t visit Cairo without seeing the pyramids right? If you’re not the patient type then I’d suggest viewing the pyramids from a nearby hotel such as the Hilton. On entry to the pyramids you’ll be constantly harassed by merchants trying to offer you camel, horse, cart rides, postcards, water, plastic pyramids and the list goes on. Try not to lose your patience with them as there’s nothing worse than being emotionally blackmailed for not paying for rides to feed half the camels of Cairo! Once inside the pyramids you are left to explore the wonders of the world in peace.

Tips:

-Zamalek is the most Westerner friendly region of Cairo. It boasts the cleanest hotels, finest dinning and beautiful colonial period architecture (most of which buildings are now embassies)

-Take a taxi – taxis are the safest mode of transport in Cairo, especially for women. Try to bargain a price with the driver before your trip, the pyramids at Giza should cost no more than 200LE for a round trip

-Roof top bars – I would suggest the roof top bar in Zamalek just off Brazil Street. Relax, eat some nibbles and smoke some sheesha, minimum of 50LE (£5) per head, an absolute bargain!

-You can’t beat a merchant/harassment free romantic walk along the banks of the Nile during sunset.

On the night of the date, randomly select one and do whatever it says.

4. Plan a Trip

Sometimes, the best way to get back to where you need and want to be is to get away. A simple weekend trip or even an overnight stay can make a huge impact on your relationship. Spending time away from world and just being able to focus on the two of you may be just what’s needed to remind you of why you fell in love.

5. Remember the Romance

A simple bouquet of flowers, a nice dinner or a hot bath are just a few ways to remind your significant other of the love you both share for one another. Don’t get so caught up in the happenings of life that you forget to romance one another again. Set aside some quality time to love on each other and rekindle the flame.

7. Not too directly!

Once an “About me” section on an online dating profile blatantly read, “Meet me at the hotel room asap!”  Avoid this kind of directness/tackiness.

8. Do not show-off your wealth

No one wants to know how much you make in a month. You are just proving how arrogant you are by doing this. Even if there are some people who want to know about it, then you are surely getting hooked on to some nasty ones. This will surely backfire on you someday.

In today’s world, more couples than ever are moving in together before they get married, and this means that more couples are learning that cohabitation means just as many delightful moments as there are potential fights. Some couples will divide everything down the middle while other couples might have someone paying an entire bill. Whatever decisions are made, they should be solidified in advance of the move-in date.

Maintain Personal Time and Privacy

Living together can be an adventure, but everyone needs a personal moment or some time apart from their significant other and it’s necessary to have a discussion on this mentally refreshing part of life before the move begins. The seasons are changing again, and the sun is going to be around a lot longer than it was just a few months ago. Many people simply feel happier when the sun is shining, and the opportunities to be outdoors increase dramatically. There are many things that you can do to maximize your time in the sun this season, and now is the time to finally cheer because it’s summer time again!!!

Timing

The first thing you need to do is find the best times to be out in the sun. You may not be able to get a great tan in the early morning or late evening, but these are great times to get outside and enjoy that beautiful, golden sphere. Take the time to do some exercising during these times of the day. Its the perfect time to run through the park with your significant other. These times are usually cooler, so you can still love the sun together without getting too hot.

Water

Swimming is another popular activity in the summer. You can maximize your time in the sun by swimming at your pool, a friend’s pool, public pool or even a creek or stream. The opportunities to enjoy the sun by some water are endless. If you have the chance, you can also visit some of the country’s most amazing beaches. There are so many countless chances to maximize your time in the sun next to water. And who doesn’t love the chance to see your guy or gal in a new swimsuit?

Sports

You may want to think about taking up golf or some other outdoor sport. A round of golf can typically take almost 4 1/2 hours. This means that you can get tons of time in the sun doing something you enjoy doing. Tennis is another great sport for the summer. Its the perfect activity for couples and even double dates!

No matter what you do in the summer, you can find a way to do it outside. Set up a movie theater outside, go for a picnic, play games, wash cars and let your imagination run wild. A great day trip to a baseball game is just another great way to spend time together and enjoy the sun.

Remember to sunscreen yourself to prevent burning or potential toxins from entering your body. Failing to sunscreen could land you indoors for a long time. Yuck!!!

When it comes to attractiveness, the good news is there’s no limit to the ways you can boost yours. I’ve tried dozens of methods over the years, and have found three fail safe options when it comes to making myself feel and be perceived as more attractive.

Dress to impress, not to seduce.

If you’re going on your first or fortieth date, it’s easy to fall back on a sexy dress that shows 90% of your legs, or a top cut so low that your bellybutton is the base of your cleavage.

Don’t do it. The 90’s are over, and showing skin is no longer the only way to be sexy.

Why is staying covered sexy?

First, it shows that you respect yourself. You have more to share with the world than a rocking body, and you know it.  Many successful lifestyle improvement programs are full of success stories about people who found a way to love and respect their bodies, and the world of difference that it made.

Secondly, the more you cover up, the more they want to see! Remember how fun Hide and Seek was as a kid? To men, a woman wearing a turtleneck and a pencil skirt is the equivalent of the best game of hide and seek they ever played.

Sure, the girl with her tramp-stamp blaring out from under a crop-top tee-shirt will turn a few heads, but a classy, sexy, covered-up look will hold their gaze, guaranteed.

It’s not Halloween—easy on the face paint

I remember my first high school dance. I stole my sister’s makeup collection—which consisted of multicolored glitter, eye-shadow in a handful of different violent shades of green and blue, and lipstick so red Ronald McDonald threatened to sue—and made myself “pretty.”

When I got to the dance, my date laughed and spent the night staring at the cheerleaders.

If you want to feel more attractive, don’t cover your face with bright colors. Nature put the hues in your skin, eyes and hair for a reason: because they complement each other! Play off of what you have, instead of trying to make yourself look like Chucky’s Bride.

Consult the makeup saleswoman at your local department store, or make an appointment for a facial at a salon. These ladies are trained to know what makes a face look good, and you won’t regret their insight.

Accept compliments

Have you even met one of those people who, no matter how kind you are to them—“That’s a beautiful sweater!”—they have a sarcastic remark in response—“Yeah, and Bill Cosby’s collection is alright, too?”

It’s obnoxious, and it’s unattractive. And we’re all guilty of it at one time or another.

Next time someone pays you a compliment, try this: Smile and say, “Thank you.”

By doing this, you’re tricking your mid—whether you believe the compliment or not—into accepting what they said as true. The result? You feel more attractive.

Date night with your significant other doesn’t always need to be an elaborate outing that costs a fortune. There are some Friday nights that all we want to do is get comfortable and watch a show. Whether it’s a TV show or movie, here are 5 shows that work really well for a night in.

One show that my wife and I love to watch is Parks and Recreation. We are also crazy Office fans, but Parks and Rec has been our favorite comedy this last year. Every Thursday night we love watching this show. The characters are hilarious and very diverse. Our favorite person in that show is Ron Swanson and his funny libertarian self. No one wears a better mustache!

The BBC show Merlin is so incredibly addictive. My wife and I are fans of this family friendly retelling of the King Arthur and Merlin story. Colin Morgan, who plays Merlin, is such a great actor. My wife and

I love the interaction between Arthur and Merlin. This is a show that both men and women love.

The movie Sleepless in Seattle is a classic and that will give any guy brownie points. Women love this movie. You can’t go wrong with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. It’s a great mix of comedy and romance.

The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the best books and films ever made. It is full of romance, action, betrayal, and revenge. This is a movie that women love because of the love story and men love for the revenge enacted on the evil best friend, Fernand Mondego.

My final pick for this top 5 isn’t what you’re expecting, but it has been a great date night choice of my wife and I. We love Harry Potter! Harry Potter is one of my favorite books I have ever read. I was grateful that the movies were well done, because we watch all 8 movies at least twice a year. Women and men can both appreciate this series of movies. It’s so fun to see Harry, Ron, and Hermoine grow up together and beat insurmountable odds. If you’re not careful, watching these movies can turn a date night into an all-nighter because you have to keep watching. Our favorite movie is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Seeing the action packed demise of Voldemort and the love story of Ron and Hermione makes it a winner. I have a few single friends and I’m about to organise a wine and cheese night as a way of getting together, mingling and having a bit of fun, so this is timely for wine tasting…

In terms of putting together a wine tasting, you should think carefully about the kind of environment that you want to establish – if holding a tasting in your home, make sure that a room is cleared out and decorated with a tablecloth and enough chairs. Remove any intrusive smells like cooking, air fresheners, or pets, as this will spoil the wine tasting. It’s also worth having a good selection of glasses, as well as spittoons or paper cups for guests that want to spit out their wine after tasting.

You can also design a wine tasting event around consistent themes that can tie together your offerings – this might be linked into a wine growing region like Bordeaux, or may be focused on a single vintage from a particular year. It’s worth advising guests on what kind of structure a wine tasting will take beforehand, so they know what to expect. It’s possible to provide food, but with a focus on not interfering with the taste of the wine. Go for unsalted biscuits and crackers, as well as light cheese – food should work more as a palette cleanser than as anything heavier.

If serving white wine, make sure it’s taken out of the fridge about an hour or so before an event starts, as this will allow it to warm up.
