Romantic destinations for adventurous couples

South Africa is the ideal destination for couples wanting to combine romance set against picturesque backdrops with a few adrenalin-inducing moments that are of the less-loving variety. Its combination of beautiful vistas, exciting natural attractions and hospitable locals makes South Africa the wonderful destination that it is.

Whether you are a daring couple that loves danger or one looking to do something just a little adventurous on your South African getaway, there are plenty of options for you. Some of our favourites include:

Hiking in the Drakensberg

The Drakensberg Mountain Range is absolutely breath-taking in its beauty, offering plenty of romantic retreats. Its dizzying heights and deep gorges are extraordinary in their sheer scope, and these make for some very exciting hiking opportunities. Because there are so many options, visitors can choose between the easier, shorter routes and the longer, challenging ones that will test your technical skills and endurance. There are a number of accommodation options in the Drakensberg, including plenty of camping sites, as well as luxurious lodges.

Rafting the Orange River

The Orange River is one of South Africa’s main rivers (being the country’s longest), and winds itself across almost the entire width of the country. Rafting on the river is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that simply cannot be missed. The faCanopy Tours - Tsitsikamma photo credit Amelia du PLessisuna and flora, scenery and local folk all combine to make for an extremely memorable adventure with stunning photographs to boot.

Elephant Back Safari

Amble through the forests, along mountain trails or across sprawling savannahs atop one of these gentle giants. Elephant back safaris usually include interactive feeding, playing with and, finally, riding an African Elephant along with an experience guide or trainer. Learn more about their plight and be instrumental in supporting local initiatives that have their conservation as the goal.

Canopy Tours

There are several places throughout South Africa that offer canopy tours. These are sturdy ziplines that are suspended above the forest at tree canopy height, allowing visitors to swing over the top and get a birds’ eye view of the lush forests below, suspended only by a body harness. Experience the lush splendour of Africa from a brand new perspective, with no shortage of stomach-lurching moments.

South Africa’s beaches are famous for their warm waters and untouched miles of pristine white sand and rolling dunes. When you are not soaking up the rays or splashing in the waves together, head out to the dunes for some exhilarating boarding. This is a fantastic way to keep fit, see some gorgeous views from the very peaks of the dunes, and learn a bit more about the unique vegetation here. Most of all, it is sure to get the heart racing as you plummet down the dune faces with the wind in your face.

Combine romance and adventure when you visit the unique land of colours, customs, and languages, South Africa.
