Is Online Dating The Way Forward For Singletons?

Mar 13, 2013 1 Comment by

With today”s busy, modern lifestyles, it is harder than ever before to find time to socialise and meet new people. Online dating is a great way to connect with those who share our interests and values and in this day and age it is no longer considered as strange as it once was!

Isn”t Online Dating For Geeks?
It used to be. In the past, only hard-core computer nerds would consider posting a picture of themselves on a website and trying to find a soulmate. But in today”s somewhat fragmented society, where people struggle to find time to socialise and meet new people and those living in cities lead increasingly insular existences thanks to advances in technology, online dating has become a must-have in the dating world. We spend hours online, shopping, ordering food, planning meals, emailing and communicating through social media, so it makes sense that we also use the internet to meet a potential partner.

Where To Start Looking
There are many websites available if you are looking for online dating, but they do vary in quality and the types of members they attract. As a general rule, dating websites fall into three categories. Paid membership sites where individuals seriously looking for a relationship can join and post a profile, free sites, which do unfortunately tend to attract a lot of people looking for casual fun and activity based sites, which are a little more relaxed than paid membership dating sites and can be free or cost to join. Activities sites such as city socialising place the focus on events and activities for members to attend, where they can meet new people (with a view to friendship or romance). It is easy to make friends online by attending some of these events as they attract people with similar interests, so you will always have something to talk about!

Writing Your Profile
We have all seen those profiles where a muscled, tanned man gets his six pack out on camera and posts a vapid few lines about himself, usually something along the lines of how he enjoys going to the gym every day and loves salad. Research shows people would rather see several different photographs of someone having fun and participating in various activities or travelling, than a couple of semi-naked “posing” shots. Photographs of you out and about with friends show that you are a sociable and interesting person, worth getting to know. Whether you are looking to or find your soulmate, always describe yourself the way friends would, so focus on your positives and spend most of your time detailing your hobbies and interests. This way you are more likely to attract somebody with similar qualities.

Don”t forget, when arranging to meet someone from a dating website, always put your own safety first. Meet in a busy, public place (ideally somewhere you are familiar with) and always let a friend know when you are going and check in with them upon your return. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy meeting new people!
