Safety of Online Dating
Online dating is popular today for a number of reasons. At one point in our very recent history, online dating had a bit of a stigma attached to it, but as people started to realize that they could quicken the speed at which a relationship blossoms, the popularity really went through the roof. With that in mind, there are a few things you should avoid when you start dating online.
- Vague Profiles
You won’t get much attention if you don’t talk about yourself in your profile. Things like “I don’t know what to put here” or “I’m knew to this whole thing, so just contact me to talk,” won’t generate interest. People are looking for someone that, at the very least, knows a bit about their self, who they are and what they want. Without having an idea of your values and what would be fun, people will just skip right over to the next person.
- Getting Discouraged
The reply rate is pretty low across the board in online dating. If you send out ten messages to potential interests and you get three replies you are in good shape. Don’t get discouraged if people don’t respond as much as you think they should. There are a ton of people on the online dating scene and they aren’t putting you off because of who you are in most cases, they may have already struck up a conversation with someone else and they are pursuing that first.
- Act Like an Teenager
Things like “Ur so hawt, we shuld hk up” will do nothing for your chances at landing a date. We all find different things attractive in our potential partner, so telling someone how hot they are isn’t going to win you bonus points. You probably wouldn’t be sending them a message if you didn’t think they were attractive in the first place. Instead,
focus on sending a first message similar to a very casual job introduction. Tell them about yourself, let them know why you are contacting them and leave them with a question or two to answer on their reply.
This is the worst possible thing you can do in online dating. Don’t upload a picture of you from ten years ago when you were in better shape. If you are a smoker and see someone that you really like that won’t date smokers, don’t change your information in hopes of winning them over then revealing the lie later. Just be yourself, be honest, and be willing to put yourself out there. People will find that attractive and chase you down.
- Feel too Safe
This is a big one. When you start to feel too safe with someone, you can set yourself up for a bad situation. The actual statistics of people getting into bad situations from online dating are pretty low, but make your first meeting happen in a public place and get to know the person first before you start spending some alone time with them. Also make sure someone else has the information about where you’ll be and when, as well as who you are going with.
