Explore Rhode Island on fantastic family trips
Today’s post is a little bit different in that we are focusing on family travel rather than trips for Singles. The reason why we thought it would be a great idea to cover family trips is because so many singles have children too and it’s helpful to know some of the better places to visit with kids. It’s time to explore Rhode Island …
As Americas First Resort, Newport is the playground of many of the USA’s rich, famous and influential people. With top quality facilities, endless stretches of beautiful beaches and some of the most expensive mansions on the East Coast to discover, what more could you ask?
Living up to the nickname of “Americas first resort” needn’t be hard for Newport, Rhode Island. Here it seems the sea is always clear, the sky always blue and the yachts in the harbour are crisp white and gleaming. Yes, it sounds like an image from a travel brochure, but for visitors to Newport, the reality is sometimes more stunning than fiction.
In the town
Famous for more than just sun and surf, Newport is a popular choice for many family vacations, both from within the US and internationally. The Kennedys enjoyed their wedding day here and Eisenhower attended the Naval War College in the town, so Newport really is a slice of American history. As part of the New England coastline, the town boasts many original 18th century homes and buildings, giving a great insight into colonial life in this part of the states. The downtown area also has a wealth of independent boutiques, top restaurants and shops and you mustn’t miss out on the wonderful palaces, summer houses and mansions that line either side of the opulent Bellevue Avenue, the playground of Americas rich and famous.
For the more adventurous
If you are looking for overseas adventure travel, Newport offers a variety of activities and attractions to get your pulse racing and your senses exhilarated. Top of the list has to be trying your hand at yachting and several companies are available to help you fulfil this wish. From chartering a yacht for the day to taking a pleasure cruise on an 80 foot schooner, you can’t come to Rhode Island without taking to the water for at least part of your trip.
Many overseas adventure travel locations will include things to do under the waves as well as on top of them and Newport is no different. There are many high quality scuba diving schools around the coast that can either take you offshore on a boat or on an impressive shore drive to experience some of the wonders that lurk beneath the waves.
For families
Many family vacations in this part of the world will centre around the beaches.
In Newport you’ll have no worries, as you’ll be spoiled for choice. With beaches all around the coast offering different experiences, you could spend your entire vacation just enjoying the seaside. Choose from the antique carousel at 1st Beach or the huge expanses of sand at Gooseberry Beach, the kids will certainly be entertained for hours wherever you go.
For a great seaside vista, take your family on a walk along the Newport Cliff Walk. Here you will experience unrivalled views of the coastline as well as getting some great views of the Newport Mansions from a different perspective. For more scenic views and a chance to see some of the local wildlife, hire a bike or car and head out on the ten mile drive or ‘Ocean Drive’ as it has become known over the years.
