How Taking Chances Made Hugh Jackman a Star

Most people are familiar with Australian-born film star Hugh Jackman. hugh jackman, celebrity section, Dating symbol blogWhether it’s for his role as the steel-clawed mutant Wolverine in the X-Men film series, or as entertainer Peter Allen in the Tony Award winning jukebox musical The Boy from Oz, Jackman has proven time and time again that he has many strings to his bow. With his latest performance, as ex-boxer Charlie Kenton in the movie Real Steel, Jackman discusses the benefits of not playing it safe and sticking with one medium.

Hugh-Jackman_wolverine, Dating Symbol blog“I try not to be safe. I just did a one-man show on Broadway and that was a little frightening. But it’s a good feeling. The most scared I’ve ever been was the first time I sang at a rugby match, Australia vs. New Zealand, in front of 100,000 people. I had a panic attack the night before.”

Jackman’s role as a failed boxer in Real Steel was something that really resonated with him. “Charlie’s resigned himself to the fact that life sucks. He’s angry at the world.  I thought it was a powerful thing to play somebody who’s desperate to get out and feels trapped on all sides. But the most powerful thing is the opportunity to redeem himself: that frightens him because now he’s aware of what he’s got to lose,” said the actor. It’s a classic movie scenario, but only through determination and unlikely odds can Jackman’s character turn his life around.

Like his onscreen counterpart, Jackman claims his determination to take chances and not repeat himself got him where he is today. As well as starring in some of the biggest Hollywood movies, including Van HelsingThe PrestigeAustralia, and Kate & Leopold, Jackman has performed as a singer, dancer and actor in many stage musicals. In fact, he began his career that way. Straight after his graduating performance at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts of Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia, in 1994, Jackman received an offer for a role on Correlli, a show that only lasted one season, but after that went on to make a name for himself on the stage in Melbourne.

His performance as Curly in the Royal National Theatre’s acclaimed production of Oklahoma! Proved he was moving in the right direction. He earned an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical, and revealed in interviews, “I totally felt like it can't get any better than this. On some level that production will be one of the highlights of my career.”

Jackman is, of course, not the only film star that made a name for himself on the stage. Fellow actor Daniel Radcliffe has been in several stage productions, most recently the highly acclaimed How to Succeed in Business, and of course Kristen Chenowith has had phenomenal success with her role in the hit Broadway production Wicked.

As one of the biggest names in Hollywood as well as on Broadway, Hugh Jackman is clearly in good company. Whatever he decides to do next, we can all be sure it will only serve to reinforce his position within the ranks of the show business elite.
