Dosha Skincare
We can diet based on our blood type, track our moods by the moon, but do we know our doshas? Knowing the science of Ayurveda may have beneficial payoff in for our hair and complexion.
When we spot focus on issues, like wrinkles, fine lines or breakouts, we never source the root issue; but according to the ancient practice of Ayurveda, the way to truly understand our skin is to look beyond the mirror.
What’s Your Dosha?
Ayuvedic discovery is based on finding which of the three doshas, or mind-body types, that describes us best. Everyone is born with a combination of these energies, but one typically reigns supreme. Understand which dosha we are, enables us to identify the best choices for our skin and bodies; as it also helps explain what food we should eat and how to make the best lifestyle choices.
Vata: Dryness
Thin, anxious, energetic with cold hands and feet, describes the Vata dosha. It corresponds to elements of air and earth, the early winter season, and cool, dry skin and hair. Lack of moisture is the biggest burden for this type, especially as skin matures.
Vatas are prone to drier skin, fine lines and dullness; and due to the dry factor, visible signs of aging appear early. This dosha needs warming, calming and rejuvenating formulas. Products with heavy oils are essential to this type.
Vatas should choose warming foods, rich in essential fatty acids found in fish and nuts.
Pitta: Redness
Pittas have warm and athletic body types; as this sign is linked with the elements of fire and water and the season of summer. Pitta skin is acidic and reactive which cause rashes, rosacea, sunburns and breakouts.
The best acne skincare treatments for this reactive type are refreshing, light and oil free products with soothing ingredients, like aloe and chamomile help this dosha achieve balance.
This fiery sign needs stress reduction exercise such as yoga and meditation. Their diet should consist of cooling foods like cucumber, watermelon, fruit juice and dark green vegetables. Avoiding spicy foods, citrus and excessive alcohol is critical for this type because it will help control internal irritation.
Kapha: Congestion
Kaphas are connected to the earth and water, and the late winter to early spring seasons. Strength and stamina describe their larger frames, with oily, thick skin; which weather environmental factors well. Kapha skin stay hydrated and ages beautifully. It isn’t uncommon for a Kapha to have hardly any lines on her face in her sixties.
Congestion exemplifies this type, so scrubs and mask are an essential part of a Kaphas beauty regimen. This type requires vigorous simulation and exercise to enhance circulation.
Not everyone falls into one dominant category; the combination beauty should follow the seasons. Vatta Pitta types should adhere to the Vatta guidelines in the winter and switch to Pitta in the summer.
Ayurvedics beauty offers a unique method of skincare diagnoses tailored to fit us perfectly; no matter our skin types. So I ask, what’s you dosha baby?
